Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for the growth of plants and grass, and so it’s often an ingredient in fertilizers. But when there’s excess phosphorus in the soil, it binds to the soil particles and becomes part of the runoff from the land. When it reaches a waterway, like a lake, river, or stream, it fuels the growth of algae. Algae grow quickly and outcompete other aquatic plants, and the growth on the top of the water not only looks and smells unpleasant, but also blocks sunlight from reaching the lake bottom. Depending on the type, algae can be toxic to humans as well, preventing use of the water for swimming or boating.
