Fall Lawn Care Fundamentals

Apply natural, low-nitrogen fertilizers

High-nitrogen and synthetic fertilizers can spur your lawn into artificial growth that can't be supported during the cooler winter months. Natural and low-nitrogen fertilizers work with the rhythm of the growing season.

Overseed patchy spots in late August

If you have cool season grass, late August is prime time to overseed the patchy spots in your lawn. Be sure to choose a high-quality seed and time the overseeding early enough in the season that grass has time to grow.

Treat broadleaf weeds strategically

If you have warm season grass, or you are not overseeding, fall is an ideal time to treat weeds. Use a natural pre-emergent like Weed Wipeout to halt weeds from germinating next spring, and/or treat with an iron-based post-emergent like Pulverize to avoid chemical-laden herbicides.

Make adjustments to mowing

For cool season grasses, adjust your mower blade to 3 inches. If you're overseeding, set it to 2 inches for the mow prior to seeding, then return to 3 inches.

Warm season grasses can be mowed lower all season, and they don't overseed. Keep the mower blade at 2 to 2.5 inches all fall.

Fall Lawn Care Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should I start fall lawn care?

A: For cool season grasses, late August to early September is ideal. For warm season grasses, late August is your final window before winter dormancy.

Q: Should I overseed and apply weed control at the same time?

A: No. Weed control can prevent seed germination. If you’re overseeding, hold off on weed treatments for at least 4 weeks

Q: Do I need to fertilize in the fall?

A: Yes. Fall fertilization helps build strong roots and prepare your lawn for winter, especially with low-nitrogen, organic formulas.

Q: Can I just use products without testing my soil?

A: You can—but you’ll get better results with a Lawnbright soil test. We personalize your plan based on what your lawn actually needs.

Q: Is this safe for kids and pets?

A: Yes! All Lawnbright products are non-toxic and safe for families, pets, and the environment.
