Seed late August through early October (or early spring as a second choice). Mow short, rake, spread, keep the surface moist for 10–14 days, and feed with Total Lawn starter fertilizer at seeding. Apply in early fall (late August to October) when soil temperatures are beginning to cool but still above ~55°F and daylight is reducing. This timing gives seedlings a chance to establish before winter dormancy and avoids the stress of summer heat.

You can also seed in early spring (March-April) as soon as the soil is workable and before heavy summer stress, but fall is preferred for cool-season blends like this.

Pro tip: Soil temperature around ~55-70 °F is a good indicator for effective germination of this blend.

How to Seed: Use a spreader or seed by hand to evenly distribute seed.

The seed you should use largely depends on your grass type, which you can find here. North Star is designed for cool season grasses, which typically overseed in the fall.

How much seed do I need for my lawn?

Getting the amount of seed right depends largely on your rate of seeding, amount of bare patches, and overall goals. Generally we say you’ll need about 8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. if you’re seeding bare ground, and 4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. if you’re overseeding. But, your mileage may vary depending on your rate of seeding. Excess seed can be saved for next season.

I have too much product. Can I save it for later?

Yes. Grass seed shelf life doesn't expire, though germination rates decline after 1 year of the date tested, so you can store products in your garage, shed or basement for next season.
