Get the most from your Lawnbright fall products

The amount depends on whether you're overseeding existing turf or seeding completely bare soil.

Based on the North Star rates:

• Existing/thin turf: 4-5 lb per 1,000 sq. ft.
• Bare areas: 8-10 lb per 1,000 sq. ft.

For example, a 5,500-square-foot lawn being completely overseeded at 4 lb/1,000 sq. ft. would require approximately 22 pounds of seed.

For completely bare areas, the higher rate would provide approximately 8-9 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft.

Yes. If your goal is a more uniform stand of grass, you can overseed the entire lawn rather than limiting seed to only the thin spots.

The key is using enough seed to achieve the desired seeding rate. Don't spread a limited amount of seed over a larger area just to make it cover the whole lawn, because the resulting seeding rate may be too low.

Yes. Core aeration is an excellent way to prepare an existing lawn for overseeding.

Aerating creates openings in the soil that allow seed to work its way into contact with the soil.

For best results:

Aerate → seed the same day.

This gives the seed an opportunity to fall into the openings created by the aerator.

Only if you actually have excessive thatch.

We recommend checking the thatch layer first and dethatching if it exceeds approximately ½ inch. If thatch isn't excessive, core aeration may be the better preparation step.

You don't want to aggressively dethatch a lawn simply because you're overseeding. The goal is to create good seed-to-soil contact without unnecessarily damaging healthy turf.

For a fall renovation, the basic sequence is:

1. Prepare the lawn Aerate and/or dethatch as needed.
2. Apply Aeroflow Approximately 1–3 days before seeding.
3. Seed Broadcast your North Star seed after aerating. Use the appropriate rates.
4. Apply starter fertilizer Apply Total Lawn Starter Fertilizer a few days to a week after seeding.
5. Establish the new grass Keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination and establishment.
6. Green Machine Wait until the new grass is established and has been mowed at least twice before applying.
7. Cold Snap Apply approximately 2-3 weeks after Green Machine, or approximately 2 weeks before dormancy (whatever comes first)

The simple version:

Aerate → Seed + Starter → Establish → Green Machine → Cold Snap

Avoid applying a pre-emergent where you're planning to seed.

Pre-emergents work by creating a barrier that prevents weed seeds from germinating—but that can also prevent your desirable grass seed from germinating.

For post-emergent weed control, Lawnbright’s guidance is to wait until the new grass is established and has been mowed multiple times before resuming weed control. One recommendation specifically uses at least three mowings as the benchmark.

If you're planning a major overseed, prioritize:

Weed control before seeding → seed → establish new grass → resume appropriate weed control.

Pulverize is intended for visible broadleaf weeds, but its reseeding directions still apply. Do not spot-treat a newly seeded area or shorten the required interval. Check the product label before deciding whether to treat weeds before or after seeding.
